Gareth Southgate revealed his players for the 2020 Euros competition this week. But what do you think? Has Southgate made some great or some dubious choices? Has he got the right balance with the squad of players he has chosen?
Jesse Lingard has been called up to play against Austria in a pre-tournament friendly, however, he hasn’t been selected in the final 26, what are your thoughts?
Furthermore, recent media speculation surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold was that he would be excluded from the final 26. So there were many surprised people when Southgate included the Liverpool right-back, proving much of the speculation wrong. During Southgate’s press conference, he admitted that he would call up 5 or 6 right-backs if he had the choice. Plus, Southgate fortified his decision to choose Alexander-Arnold, Trippier, Walker and James by saying that the four defenders are among the best 26 footballers in the country. He went on to say that they are all tactically aware and possess the attributes needed to help England to win a football tournament.

A question on many peoples mind will be, why play Jessie Lingard in a pre-tournament friendly if he is not being selected for the tournament? Will this create future problems for Southgate? Lingard may have a great game against Austria, scoring a hat-trick and creating assists. Imagine the media reaction if that was to happen. However, key experienced players are now coming back from injury and Southgate believes he is creating balance within the side in preparation for England’s first competitive game on June 13th.

Overall it appears that Southgate’s squad announcement has had a positive reaction. He has chosen a blend of youth and experience. Southgate has previously taken England to two semi-finals and we are sure he will be looking to book England’s place at Wembley in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday, July 11th. Another announcement was the Nike football sponsorship for the Men’s England Football team and their squad numbers for the Euro 2020 tournament.
