The Ashes Series Appears To Be Stronger Than Ever

The Ashes series is growing in popularity

The Ashes series appears to be as strong as ever with tickets for the first four days of all five Tests selling out, and major players from both sides have stressed the game’s importance to their careers. However, the style of cricket the teams have played so far has been less predictable. The Ashes series consists of five Test matches, each lasting up to five days; the side with the most wins wins the series. Because of the interwoven challenge of skill and endurance, Test cricket is regarded as the sport’s top level and possibly its purest form.

The England and Wales Cricket Board planned to end the Ashes early to free up the summer for its own I.P.L. (Indian Premier League). Furthermore, Australia will only play the five Ashes Tests this year, scheduled over six weeks in early summer. Warm-ups were not an option for the visitors since the best players from both the English and Australian teams spent April and May in the I.P.L. playing Twenty20 cricket, considered a far faster and increasingly more popular three-hour variant of the game.

Australia recently defeated India to become the world Test champions. The ICC World Test Championship final was played at The Oval in London between Australia and India. Australia won the second ICC World Test Championship by a margin of 209 runs. This was Australia’s first Championship title, and with the win in the final, they became the first team to win all three ICC events.

A brief look at the History of the Ashes

England and Australia played their first cricket series in 1882 before Australia was a country. The 73rd edition started on Friday at Edgbaston. Few international sports events have a longer history than the Ashes. The term ‘Ashes’ was coined when England was beaten by Australia for the first match on home soil on August 29, 1882, at The Oval. Ever since, the two teams have competed for one of cricket’s most coveted honours, dubbed “The Ashes.”
