The Return Of Community Rugby

the return of community and grassroots rugby

Do you follow or play rugby league or rugby union? Well, you will be excited about the return of community grassroots rugby.
It is hard to believe that it has been just over 12 months since rugby league and rugby union clubs had the opportunity to take to the pitch. Neither codes have played a game in all that time. However, both codes are now permitted to get back on the pitch. There are still, however, some restrictions in place for both players and supporters of either code.

rugby league is back

However, with new restrictions in place and a return to the pitch, it has lifted the spirit of everyone at rugby league clubs across the country. It’s great to see both youth and open age teams back on the pitch, playing the game we love.

rugby leagues fight for survival

Back in January 2021, Dave Woods the BBC Rugby League Correspondent highlighted how rugby league community clubs have been fighting for survival during the frequent lockdowns as a result of the pandemic. His article covers rugby league’s amateur clubs and how the influence COVID-19 has affected the rugby community and the game. Read Dave Woods article online.

rugby union returns

On March 29th, community rugby union clubs were approved for group training under stage D1. As of April 26th, both adult and age-grade teams have been allowed to play competitive matches with local opposition. However, scrums or mauls are not allowed for the time being.

For many clubs, a complete return to competitive rugby union will be not be allowed until the new season kicks off this September, giving players plenty of time to up fitness levels and re-immerse themselves in the physical nature of the game. Furthermore, the players will appreciate this time, having missed so much competitive rugby union over the past 12 months.

preparing for the season ahead

Several rugby clubs are now preparing for the new season with clubs looking to make a real impact by kitting out the entire team. A fresh new look is essential for an on-pitch presence.

The “Clive Woodward clean shirts theory” is a great example of this, rugby teams starting the second half, thinking “here we go again”. During Clive Woodward’s coaching of the national rugby team, he insisted that the players change their shirts at half time, creating a “fresh shirts” approach. It is believed this may give teams a psychological advantage against their competitors, benefitting from a fresh look and a feeling of a new start.
